All Saints Sunday

This Sunday, November 5, 2006 we will celebrate All Saints Day.  This is a day      designated in the Christian calendar year to remember our members who have gone home to be with the Lord since the last All Saints Day.  As the body of Christ gathered on this day  we are invited to remember our loved ones who have passed who were not members of our church.  This will be a high and Holy day in our church.

We have asked the family members to provide to us their favorite framed              photograph of their loved one so that it can be displayed in a place of honor.  As the name of their family member is called they are invited to light a candle in his or her memory.  A bell or a chime will be sounded.  Very soft music and singing will be taking place during this time.  Then our congregation will be invited to place a lighted candle in position in memory of their loved ones who have gone home to be with the Lord since last All Saints Day.  We will close the service by sharing in the Lord’s Supper together.

All Saints Day to me has always been a very special time in the life and ministry of the church.  On this day one can just feel the reverence of God, his comfort, his stillness, and his peace.  This is a time when we can draw into God and feel his closeness.

This year we remember:

Mr. Terry Kimsey Floyd

October 16, 1948— December 12,2005

Mrs. Zula Wynn

April 06, - March 29, 2006

Ms. Beryl Farmer

August 29, 1919 - April 07, 2006

Ms. Phyllis Maude Stewart

1929 - April 19, 2006

Mrs. Marie W. Quattlebaum

August 16, 1921 - August 01, 2006

“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!"

Revelation 21:3-5a (NIV)

Randy

“God sets the lonely in families”

Psalm 68:6

On Saturday, October 21, the Georgia Theatre Conference gave me its highest honor-The Leighton Ballew award for Distinguished Service to Theatre in Georgia.  The late Dr. Ballew was once chair of the Drama Department at UGA, and was the founder of the Georgia Theatre Conference.  Many years ago, when a young math teacher came to see him,     explaining that he had been assigned to direct the one-act play at his school, Ballew agreed to meet the young man on weekends and give him lessons in how to direct a play.  That math teacher, whose name was Lynn Wooddy, became one of the people who built the Georgia Thespian Society into one of the 2-3 largest high school theatre societies in the nation.  Lynn Wooddy, and a couple of other dear friends whose pictures you may have seen in last week’s paper, introduced me to the Georgia Theatre  Conference in 1987.  It has been home ever since.

Most of my family was with me for the award.  Phillip had a band competition and could not be there, but Susan and Gabe were there, and    Stephanie and a friend drove down from      Evansville.  When I accepted the award, I used the passage from Psalms as a way of introducing my family to the 400-500 people present.  I      explained though, that the scripture says God places us not in one family, but in families.  I went on to introduce my larger family—my fellow    theatre teachers, parents and students from   Camden High.  To that group, I introduced my greater family—the members of the Georgia  Theatre Conference, and representatives from the still larger family—the Southeastern Theatre   Conference.

As I shared with many of you in church on the morning after receiving the award, I am thankful that God placed me in so many families where I can have a sense of belonging, but I am especially grateful for the family I have at St. Marys United Methodist Church. You have shown your love to me, and to my family, for nearly a dozen years now.  As my thoughts turn to the Thanksgiving season, I find that I thank God every time I remember you!

In His Service,

Dean
